I want to start working with birds...?

Recently, my grandfather passed away. I went to Jamaica, where he lived to be at the funeral. And there at his house was a green parrot. I'm not sure the type. But every morning and every afternoon, Petey, the bird, will call for grandpa; religiously. After staying a week in Jamaica and taking care of Petey and getting to know him, I have realized that I would love to work with birds. More specifically, macaws as we used to own when I lived in Jamaica. I was thinking to work at a pet shop, but thought that if I could possibly work along side a breeder, then it would be wonderful. Do you guys have any suggestions? I would love to own a macaw in the future, but I want first hand experience first. Do you think a breeder would take up someone? I'm not looking for money, just experience.
